Our Chuch at Work in the Community

As a congregation we participate actively within our community in a variety of ways:

Loaves and Fishes

There is a generous response whenever there is a genuine need for practical help whether it be for casseroles for families where there is illness, handyman jobs that need to be done for the elderly, help is always readily available.  We are also very involved in “Loaves and Fishes” a group set up by the churches of Portland to provide help for those in difficult circumstances.

Practical Help

Practical help to those in the community who, because of age or circumstances, have difficulty undertaking household maintenance can receive assistance. A specially equipped trailer with a wide range of tools can often be seen on the Portland streets or outside homes where needy clients have asked for assiatance.
A team of of active and effective volunteer handymen provide the manpower for this service.  It is available through Loaves and Fishes

Holiday Family Program (SUFM Beach Mission)

The beach mission is an annual out reach to children, young people and parents conducted right after Christmas.  The program which is a formal part of the Glenelg Shire's holiday program has been running since 1896, one of the longest running programs in Australia.  Our church provides about one third of the leaders for this 10 day program which is conducted outdoors on lawns right by the harbour and across the road from many of Portland's favourite eating places.  With morning and evening activities, cumulative attendances run into the multi hundreds for the duration.  The Christian faith is shared through drama, puppets, songs, story telling and small activity groups.
