As a congregation we are participate actively within in our community in a variety of ways:
Loaves and Fishes There is a generous response whenever there is a genuine need for practical help whether it be for casseroles for families where there is illness, handyman jobs that need to be done for the elderly, help is always readily available. We are also very involved in “Loaves and Fishes” a group set up by the churches of Portland to provide help for those in difficult circumstances. For further information regarding Loaves and Fishes contact Graeme on 5529 2218.
Practical Help Another initiative to be undertaken shortly will be to provide practical help to those in the community who, because of age or circumstances, have difficulty undertaking household maintenance. A specially equipped trailer is being assembled for this purpose. For enquiries ring Jim on 5523 2347
South Portland Primary School Chaplaincy:
This is a 2 day per week program at South Portland Primary School which has about 110 students. There is a need for support and friendship within our schools. My role as School Chaplain is to be just that: a friend at all times, especially when students are struggling. I share in Religious Education classes, support the school Social Wellbeing Officer, Principal, teachers and parents. I also meet needs during times of difficulty, illness or personal grievances. A chaplain is able to help instil and teach core values and leadership skills for adult life as well as contributing via an article in the school newsletter each week. As chaplain I enjoy getting out with the students and being involved with their Physical Education classes, integrating individuals into community service programs to make them more aware of ways students can support and give back to their community. During lunch times I run activities for students who are lonely, struggling with making friends or just want to be around an older adult. This is a terrific opportunity to serve others as Christ’s servant by simply being a friend to others. It opens the door to share Christ’s love with others in a non-threatening and comfortable way. Coming Soon... Holiday Family Program (SUFM Beach Mission) The beach mission is an annual out reach to children, young people and parents conducted right after Christmas. The program which is a formal part of the Glenelg Shire's holiday program has been running since 1896, one of the longest running programs in Australia. Our church provides about one third of the leaders for this 10 day program which is conducted outdoors on lawns right by the harbour and across the road from many of Portland's favourite eating places. With morning and evening activities, cumulative attendances run into the multi hundreds for the duration. The Christian faith is shared through drama, puppets, songs, story telling and small activity groups. For further information regarding SUFM contact Aaron on 5521 7275.
